You are not suffering from a deja vu. This is the second C&E record to come out the last 6 months and thusly the second release party. This record is called No Rest. Its a very fascinating (even for us!) piece of work produced by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust at Klangbad Studios in Scheer, Germany. Several reviews are below.

This is also exciting because it will be the first time we are doing an entire set as a full band. Pete Kerlin will be playing bass, Kristin Muller will be on drums. Special guests, The Fancy, will be guest vocalizing. Also on the bill are P.G SIx and Meridians, both amazing. All starts at 9pm, we play second. It'll run on time. recently C&E has been having problems with our myspace account. An unknown party has contested our right to post our own original songs!!! And myspace at this time is giving us no working option to contest this legal issue. So C&E officially apologise for you not being able to listen to some of our tracks on our page, and am working on creating a preview page here on our own website where a curious listener can check us out. Nachdem Frau Wasserbäch ja in ihrer letzten Konzertkritik den mangelnden Exotikgrad ihres Bekanntenkreises beklagt hatte, wollte ich an dieser Stelle eine überbrillante Retourkutsche zum Besten geben, in welcher das Satzfragment “nur schwäbische Pleidelsheimerin” verbraten wird. Aber da wird nix draus. Erstens wäre das unsouverän und uncharmant (ehrlich gesagt wäre das aber kein Problem bei meinem miesen Charakter), und zweitens (der wahre Grund): mir fällt nix ein. Unexotisch und unkreativ, die Natur kann einen manchmal wirklich hart bestrafen (für was eigentlich??).

Mittwoch abends um 23 Uhr in den Waggons des FFUS. Damit schrauben wir die Indie-Cred nach all den 100 Euro-Konzerten und GNTM-Soundtrackern der letzten Zeit wieder gehörig nach oben (im Gegenzug die Zugriffszahlen logischerweise nach unten). Den LIDL und ALDI Menschen sei gesagt: 4 Euro Eintritt. Aber wir sind hier nicht bei der Stiftung Warentest und führen öde Preis-Leistungsdiskussionen, hier geht’s natürlich um Kunst. Wer Musikerlebnisse ökonomisch betrachten will, darf das gerne tun und mich damit bitte verschonen.

Nach Ewigkeiten verschlägt es mich mal wieder hier her. Warum ist mir nicht ganz klar, denn eigentlich ist es hier super. Mitten in der Stadt, aber total woanders, und an einem so lauen Sommerabend wirklich extrem angenehm. Wo sonst wird man außerdem am Tresen von Mister Sunshinepop himself Monsieur Mo Rio bedient (der, um mein Wohlbefinden noch weiter zu steigern, sich sogar an unsere gemeinsamen Besigheimer Wurzeln erinnert)?
Eine handvoll Leute sind da, aber wie sagt das italienische Sprichwort so schön: “pochi, ma buoni” (selber nachschlagen!). Von Anfang herrscht eine sehr angenehme Wohnzimmeratmosphäre. Die zwei Mädels von Christy & Emily stehen ca. einen Meter von mir weg auf einer halbkreisförmigen Bühne, die mit einem satt gefüllten Pedal & Effekten-Board (heißt bestimmt korrekt ganz anders) und einem Wurlitzer bestens gefüllt ist. Der erste Song erinnert mich in seiner Art her ein wenig an Spacemen 3. Ein monotones Grundthema wird mit allerlei Soundeffekten psychedelisch immer weiter gesteigert, während die Hauptsängerin (die Keyboarderin) ab und an ein schönes “Sunshine girl, it’s a rainy day” von sich singt. Die andere Dame bedient hauptsächlich die Gitarre und singt die zweite Stimme. Überhaupt ist der sehr schöne zweistimmige Gesang ein Hauptmerkmal des Sounds. Ein paar Songs kommen mit ein wenig Beat daher, die meisten aber kommen ohne aus. Trotzdem wird es nicht die Spur langweilig, dazu ist die Musik einfach zu schön, die Beiden zu sehr in ihrer Musik versunken und auch die Dynamik stimmt. Auf und Abs, psychedelische Soundgewabbere durchbrochen von wunderschönen Gesangsbögen. Psychedelic-Folk oder sowas. “Tidal Wave” von den Electric Eels wird gecovert ebenso wie ein Stück von den Misfits. Sehr toll das alles. Intimer, schöner und besser kann man seinen Mittwochabend nicht verbringen als hier. Und unbezahlbar ist am Ende der Moment, als Schmoudi und ich uns bei der Sängerin CDs kaufen. Meine Güte was für eine rührende, ehrliche Freude uns da entgegenschlägt. Da könnte man glatt vergessen auf was für einem Planeten man eigentlich rumtappst. Charme 1000 (eher mehr). Bin jetzt Fan von denen.
Freu mich schon auf das nächste Konzert hier, und bis dahin frag ich mich, warum ich alter life-waster die ganzen letzten Jahre nicht öfters hier war. Wahrscheinlich musste ich Fernsehen schauen…

KONZERT IM WIENER RHIZ

Brutzel-Folk aus Brooklyn

Aus dem New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn kommt ja zurzeit jeder. Zumindest im Pop wirkt es so als wirke dort seit einigen Jahren eine besonders günstige kosmische Kraft. Diese ereilt - wie in der Popkultur so oft - hauptsächlich Buben mit Gitarren. Eine Ausnahme aus all dem MGMTs, Vampire Weekends oder TV On The Radios sind da Christy & Emily. Zwei Frauen, die sich auch nicht auf den üblichen Trampelpfaden des avancierteren Lärms mit Pop-Breitseite bewegen, sondern fragile und dennoch nicht zerbrechlich wirkende Folk-Musik spielen.

Avant-Folk, wie der Connaisseur sofort einfordern würde. Denn die beiden unterlegen ihre von Piano und Gitarre getragene Musik nicht nur mit knuspernden Elektronik-Bruzeln, die beiden haben sich in der Vergangenheit auch schon an John Cage zu schaffen gemacht - ohne deshalb vor lauter Denkerstirnrunzeln auf den Schönklang zu vergessen. Schließlich war man auch einmal Punk. Logo. Aktuell sind Emily Manzo und Christy Edwards auf Europatournee und gastieren kommenden Samstag mit ihrem wunderbaren Album Gueen's Head im Wiener Rhiz. Germany So Far...

Hello Everyone,

Well, I dont have much time to tell the long versions of our journey so far, but the short way for me to say it is Christy and I are having what you would call an adventure!

We arrived in the UK with the "normal" stress and headaches of lost baggage (including her guitar) and immigration grumbles, but thanks to the Glastonbury invite we were allowed entry and slowly over the next few days all of the lost items were returned. Glastonbury was of course the muddy mess that it is famous for, but we saw two incredible shows: Neil Young and Horace Andy.

The UK dates went really well and we made a lot of fans in a place I've never heard of before, called Derby. I was able to join the Nightingales for my first official shows with them and had a blast. Most importantly we became part of the Garrett family, who really took care of us and helped us get medicine for Christy's case of bronchitis. We played a few shows with Gina Birch and got to meet other members of the Raincoats as well. We joined Robert Llyod on his session with John Kennedy at xfm, who is still playing tracks from our new record, Superstition.

Andi Schmid helped us across the French border with all of our gear and got us finally down to our other "family" at Klangbad studios for a few days of rest. The german dates started on July 12th and have included ship harbors (Offenbach), hippie farms (Kassel, Puch Fest), fancy restaurants (Schwerin, Munich, Berlin), east german bars (Leipzig), art gallleries (Leipzig), proper clubs (Ulm, Hamburg), pizza parlors (Buchloe), old abandoned train cars (Stuttgart), and today we travel outside of Munich to play in a small town where the local fire department has lent us their PA.

We've played on several radio stations here as well, including byte.fm in Hamburg and a great session at zundfunk here in Munich. Yesterday we got a great tour from Dirk Wagner of the Suddeutsche Zeitung and went to a pretty fabulous tomato party. We decided to end the evening with a trip to the hospital (why not?) to check out our various ailments (Christy's lingering cough and my stomach virus) and I was asked the hilarious question: "maybe it was the Munich beer?"

We travel to Vienna and the Czech Republic this weekend as our adventure continues...

NOW WE ARE IN GERMANY!!!

Hello anyone.
E and I are now in Scheer at the wonderful Faust Studios. Joachim Irmler is busy cooking some delicious meal that will involve a lot of meat (not fish).
We escaped the UK quite smoothly. So sorry we could not advertise our shows there.
We played with the Nightingales at Glastonbury. I have never been to such a large concert(s) and have never seen so many muddy people nor smelled such foul public restrooms. We camped out in the "artist" area (at least the ones that are not famous enough to get hotel rooms) and as the Gales said, "just be glad we aren't out there with the rest of the punters". Indeed.
We played first on saturday at 11 a.m. on the John Peel stage and our set was used basically as a sound check for the rest of the day. I had an amplifier fall on me. Ironically the Nightingales were the only band on that stage to have actually known John Peel and be promoted by him. The good part was that we rocked dispite the bad sound.
But now we are geared up for a wonderful month here so please tell any friends you may have in Germany to check us out. Our first show is in Offenbach at Hafen II , July 12th 10 pm.
We are missing our families and friends but are quite excited to be playing so much music.

The fourth installment of "Quiet Noise," a monthly experimental music series at Sound Fix features Till by Turning and Matthew Welch and Jeremiah Cymerman.

Till by Turning, a chamber group now celebrating it's fifth year of concerts and commissions, will present Katherine Young's new work for wurlitzer and tuba, Anton Webern's Eight Early Songs, improvisations by members of the ensemble and arrangements of Emily Manzo's songs. The group will be joined by Dan Peck (tuba), Judith Berkson (mezzo-soprano) and Christine Edwards (guitar).

Matthew Welch is a composer/performer who has released records on Tzadik and Leo and leads his own ensemble, Blarvuster. Jeremiah Cymerman is a clarinetist who has released records on Tzadik and Solponticello and can often be found playing solo concerts. Their duo project, which has a forthcoming 12" release on Thor's Rubber Hammer, features quick changes, tight improvisations and a discerning use of extended techniques.

In celebration of our funny little music video, there is a spooky movie/pumpkin carving/hot cider/candy party tonight at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn. It starts after 8pm, along with our video, Superstition, there will also be a screening of Paul Rowley's Berlin Filter (sooo frightening) and Sebastian Ischer's Dream, starring the fabulous and mysterious Katie Eastburn.

C&E have just gotten back from a great trip to Germany. We played at the Klangbad festival to a huge tent full of people and cozy couches. We got an encore which we were not prepared for and it took us a good 5-10 minutes to figure out what to play while the audience cheered us on. Thank You!!
After that we played wonderful shows in Ulm (our thermin player's stomping ground), Ravensburg (Trinity made me a drawing there), Stuttgart (Wagen Hallen is amazing-who knew!),Munich (great breakfast), Berlin (2 shows in 1 night), and Liepzig (NUFA!).
After that we returned to Scheer and spent the next week and a half recording a record with Hans Jochim Irmler of FAUST!!! He has a beautiful studio and a wonderful heart. Thanks so much to him and Andi and Cornelia, who all pampered us and made us feel at home and extremely creative.
